WWW6 tutorial:
enriching document structure: HTML, CSS and XML

this tutorial - originally called extending HTML - discussed why HTML should be extensible.

the two speakers gave a brief history on the evolution of HTML and what the problem with the current version of HTML is. the major drawback with HTML is the mix between contents and presentation markup. this problem is currently address by the introduction of the so called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). version one of the recommendation of the W3C for CSS has been released in december 1996. for more details on CSS see W3C track: Cascading Style Sheets.

the speakers listed a number of features they would like to see in a new markup language:

then they presented XML as a possible solution to the problems mentioned above.
